“I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo.
"So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”

“The world is indeed full of peril, and in it there are many dark places; but still there is much that is fair, and though in all lands love is now mingled with grief, it grows perhaps the greater.”

If you are used to modern fantasy that’s fast paced and action packed, The Fellowship of the Ring is going to take some time getting used too . The chapters are quite long, and the pacing slow starting out; the first third or so of the book is just travel, with lots of description of the landscape and journey. However, I overall didn’t mind the slower pace, and it was nice to just cozy up and take my time reading.

I also appreciate Tolkien’s dedication to realism; of course it would takes months and months to travel through the country! The amount of time he spent creating whole histories for this world, constructed and evolved languages as they do in real life from migration, time, etc. is absolutely fascinating and exciting. Amid all the peril, Sam, Merry, and Pippin (homebodies like any good hobbit!) refuse to abandon Frodo. Although the Fellowship is a bit of a but of a grab-bag of characters, you can see how their relationships develop as they journey together. Their common goal—-to destroy the One Ring and protect their own kingdoms—-eventually develops beyond an alliance into friendship. Friendship is the anchor, the light in the dark days their world is facing. I can’t wait to continue the series this summer!
