Seven Summers by Paige Toon is a two-for-one love story that feels both authentic and, at times, a bit cliché.

Liv, who lives and works in Cornwall, meets Fin, an up-and-coming musician visiting family from L.A. One magical summer, the two fall in love. But circumstances beyond their control prevent either of them from relocating to be together. Instead of trying long distance, they make a pact: if they’re both single, they’ll reunite in Cornwall each summer.

The story opens in the present day—summer seven—when Liv meets a mysterious stranger. Told through flashbacks to each of their past summers, as well as glimpses into summers after the seventh, the book weaves a layered timeline that mostly avoids falling into predictable romance tropes… until the very end, when everything gets tied up a little too neatly.

I enjoyed the book overall, but I think the ending dulled the impact a bit for me.
