This is middle grades fiction at its absolute BEST. This is literature overall at its very best. Roshani Chokshi shines here with a read that is accessible to pre-teens but explores themes of the impact of parents’ deaths, difficult family dynamics, the consequences of colonization…all in the context of Phillipine culture. Beautifully written literature within the confines of the current editorial requirements for middle grades fic which seem to really limit authors’ syntax and vocabulary. This is one I’ll come back to and will recommend everywhere.
