God Emperor of Dune by Frank Herbert

4.0

Herbert illustrated deep insight into the dangers of allowing the past to be your only guide; of holding onto what you know while refusing to learn something new; of surrendering your conscious states to the security of a leader, a leisure, or a fear of finding what is out there.

Leto Atreides II is a brilliant illustration of a benevolent dictator, who perfectly balances chaos and order, and yet, is not enough. Tyrants can make things momentarily good, yet they suck the lifeblood out of their followers by producing non-living beings.

Herbert seems to be saying: Live consciously and welcome the unknown, or someone will live for you, and your life will wither away, even if the one who leads you is a perfect leader.
