A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J. Maas
4.0

I liked this one about the same as #2, maybe a little less. The plot is expansive, but even with a bit of sprawling, it somehow moves forward. There is so much going on in each of these books (and, in particular, so many substantive topics being addressed) that sometimes I think it'd be better to pare it down though. I definitely had favorite subplots/scenes and least favorites, but I won't be a spoiler.

I don't know if I will ever understand the dynamic between the 3 sisters. And there is so much machismo in every male character (which is almost always described as being inherent not learned...not my favorite).

I have mixed feelings about the fact that there is so much individual trauma in the books. On the one hand, I think it's important and interesting to build this into fictional characters; in other series it's usually non-existent or at best, glossed over. But *every* character seems to have their own, *huge* trauma(s) to deal with: all 3 sisters, Rhys, Cassian, Azriel, Mor, Amren, Lucien, Clotho and every librarian, Tamlin, and I'm probably missing some. In the context of how many years they've been alive, and the wars, and their families, it all 'makes sense'/is justified narratively, but it's another instance where I wonder if 'less is more' and whether the topic might be better addressed if it were pared down in scale.
