How to Keep House While Drowning: A Gentle Approach to Cleaning and Organizing by KC Davis

5.0

As someone with multiple physical and mental health conditions that make care tasks hard, KC Davis's book has helped me immensely. Starting with undoing the shame and moral judgment many of us have around our hygiene and chores, or as she calls them, "care tasks", and moving into frameworks and strategies that help to make our spaces functional for each of us with whatever difficulties we're facing, this book challenged me, moved me to tears, and helped me build systems that work for me.

I adored the thoughtfulness put into making the book accessible to neurodivergent folks, including everything from font, alignment, chapter structure, and even a shortcut path through the book for when the whole thing is too much. She intentionally brought in voices from a variety of experiences to speak to neurodivergence, disabilities, and hygiene for Black hair types and kept awareness of privilege from making the book inaccessible. I can't recommend this enough.
