The Count of Monte Cristo [Abridged]
by Alexandre Dumas
Loved every second of this book. It kept me hooked from beginning to end, much to the chagrin of my sleeping routine. I'm not sure what to make of Edmond dantes. I pity him and love him and cheer for him and despise him and am frustrated and annoyed by him... But that is the amazing nature of this character created by Dumas. I love that the message of this book is wait and hope. Not wait and scheme or wait and grow angrier, but wait, and hope. Human existence can be summarized in those two words. That is what I take away from my time spent in Marseilles, Rome, Paris, and the chateau de'If. Our pace of life should always be upward, towards the light. Though it may be harder, we must put our trust and lives into god's hands, not try to take that power for our own. And we must also help our fellow travelers upward as well, not cast them down. For that is what really matters, how our fellow man feels to be around us.
