Winter World by A.G. Riddle

3.0

In WINTER WORLD planet Earth has almost entirely frozen over. And the cause might be something extraterrestrial. We follow our 1st person narrators inventor James and astronaut Emma as they embark on a dangerous mission they might not come back from.

When I started reading I was pleasantly surprised that the story is told in 1st person present tense with is my favourite POV, though the downside here is that the two characters' voices sound very similar. But the stakes are high and I *should* have been gripped. In reality the book didn't always hold my attention though there were enough suspenseful scenes to keep me going. The plot also offers some good twists, some of which I didn't see coming, others I did.

I do have a bit of a difficult relationship with the character of Emma. In the beginning I thought "cool, a strong heroine", but all too soon she turns into a character that needs to be saved, that is weak, etc. For being written by a male author, the book is still okay in that regard, though I wish Emma would have been given more physical strength. That aside, the romance in here is pretty good.
