trish204 's review for:

Mary Poppins by P.L. Travers
4.0

I like to start off my reading year with some children's classics. This time, it's the one and only, the incomparable Mary Poppins. There is nobody quite like her. Whether you've seen the movie(s) or read the book(s), some way or another everyone has heard her name.

The East Wind one day guides Mary Poppins to Cherrytree Lane. For the Banks family really could do with her help. With her signature witty remarks and never-explained actions that often are quite magical, she helps the children (there's four of them in the book, by the way) as much as the parents.

This is a special edition from a few years ago that had then Children's Laureate Lauren Child illustrate the story. I will review the story itself separately as I'm reading a boxed set I recently acquired with the first 4 stories. This review, however, is for Child's illustrated editions.

Unfortunately, the illustrations weren't entirely my cup of tea. I like the idea of a smashbook / art journal style that combines different media such as pencil drawings and pieces of fabric.

Here are some examples of the art:

Generally, I don't mind more modern takes on classic stories as a matter of principle. However, it didn't quite work for me here. Just not "my" Mary Poppins, I guess.
