Beasts of Prey by Ayana Gray

5.0

Beasts of Prey is an excellent example of a book that isn't technically perfect, but it is perfect for me as a person.

I love quest storylines, tropical jungle settings, mental illness rep, and coming of age. Beasts of Prey has all of these and executes them beautifully. Koffi is an underdog who just doesn't give up despite everything being against her and I love her for it. Ekon is deeply flawed, but continually strives to be better. The villains are devious, deceitful, and greedy, much like the villains we run into in real life. While the characters were in the jungle, I felt like I was there myself, hearing the parrots and monkeys overhead and the humidity smothering me.

Are there some pacing issues? Sure. Is there some super convenient plot armour? Yup. Do I care? Nope. I need book 2 meow.
