All Boys Aren't Blue by George M. Johnson

challenging dark emotional funny hopeful informative inspiring lighthearted reflective sad tense medium-paced

I challenge everyone to read this book. Hell, buy it, read it and listen to the audiobook together. Do it all.
I did. It was amazing. There are going to be chapters I personally think should be heard and read to be honest. Brutal honesty and trigger warnings aside, the bigger picture to me was the village. His community at home.

The dynamic of his upbringing is everything I believe every child deserves: independence, patience, autonomy, creativity, freedom, discipline and empathy. Every family has its faults but the values he grew up having, the things he learned, the way his family always taught the kids to have each other's backs... so many messages throughout the book are what should ring true in everyone's homes and it doesn't. Whenever someone doesn't understand something they immediately want to erase it, deny it or belittle it out of fear.

For Black families especially who have kids that are queer I strongly suggest you read this. It's time to be honest about the people who are in our lives whether you like it or not.
