I was just going to write my standard review for these types of books (YA simple romance). But then I read a review that said this book is/was massively popular, and I just couldn't not write more about it. (I picked the book up myself in a second hand store, so I did not do any research on the book before starting this read ;) )
So, am I going to take this book way too seriously for what it is? Yeah. Am I sorry? No.
In the same review it was mentioned how this book is (apparently) written by a youtuber and how bad it is that 'famous' people 'take up space' in the literary publishing world from people who write sound books. I don't agree with this. Sometimes you just want a quick and easy read. Sometimes you don't care that it's predictable and doesn't have fancy writing. Sometimes that's exactly what you want and need.
What I didn't like however was how the writer tried to explain that it is okay to be different and non-perfect. But at the same time I feel like she is trying too hard to portray the main character in such a way. The protagonist doesn't care about fashion, etc. But does of course still care about other people's opinions. I feel that she should've/could've put more emphasis on that it is okay to like fashion, makeup etc, and that it doesn't make a person instantly shallow. She's trying to make a point, that it's okay to be "different", but forgetting that it is also okay to be mainstream and care about these things, as long as it makes a person happy.
Related to this, at one point it was written:
"Normally, I like Mondays. I know, I know, I'm a freak!"
Which again makes it seem as if this character is so quirky and amazing and might add pressure to be different to young people. This is not necessary. You don't need to find something which set you out from other people. You will find something naturally eventually.
Lastly, it felt a bit weird that the protagonist is 15 (almost 16), and the main love interest is 18? I feel like this shouldn't be promoted so to say. Of course it can work, but it's likely to cause major differences between two people which wouldn't be there without this age gap. It just felt unnecessary.
I also love how she addressed certain topics like panic attacks and giving tips to teen girls on how to manage things in their life. And that you're never the only one going through something.
However, if I wasn't so scared of the impact it might have on teen girls I would say:
Great nice easy read! Amazing book if you just want something simple :)
