If I Die in a Combat Zone: Box Me Up and Ship Me Home by Tim O'Brien

4.0

I was looking for 19th century Napoleonic naval fiction, and ended up at this book, along with Tim O'Brien's The Things They Carried. This book is a memoir from before he recieved his draft notice until he was on the plane returning from Vietnam.

Tim's war is a terrifying slog in a series of disjointed landscapes, a synecdoche for a war he believes is wrong. He tries several times before going to avoid serving, and each time is disheartened because he does not have the courage to buck the army, or desert, or take the boat to Canada.
