A Duel with the Vampire Lord by Elise Kova

4.0

After being disappointed with A Dance with the Fae Prince, I wasn't sure what to expect going into the next Married to Magic story - but what an interesting & entertaining read this was!

A Duel with the Vampire Lord grabbed my attention from the beginning: with the dark, mysterious vibes of the world, an intriguing plot that kept going places I did not see coming, and compelling characters I was eager to learn more about. There were a couple of moments where I didn't like how Floriane behaved towards Ruvan, but I guess - considering her upbringing and everything she believed to be true for all of her life - she needed a while to change the way she saw the world and, especially, her supposed enemy. Her inner conflict made it a more believable enemies-to-lovers story in a way. I liked how they had to work together and by doing so got to know and appreciate one another. That part, however, did feel a bit short-lived, since Ruvan was sidelined for a bit, and I would've loved to see them spend more time together. Even so, they had great chemistry and I was pleased by how everything turned out in the end.

I also loved Kova's take on vampires and their history, and how & why they needed blood. It felt unique and brought a breath of fresh air to an otherwise very familiar trope. Now I'm even more curious to see what the next book in this series of stand-alones will bring. I'm looking forward to finding that out!
