This was a hefty book - almost 31 hours on audio, over 800 pages in print - and I devoured it in two days. As always, King could write a telephone directory and it’d still be more engaging than most contemporary fiction. The story is intricately woven, packed with vivid, believable characters you can fully immerse yourself in. The bittersweet ending landed beautifully.

That said, I’m still baffled as to why Sadie had to be a virgin divorcee. It’s the kind of detail that screams “old man fantasy,” much like Mr. Mercedes did. And, the male protagonist Jake/George reads more like he’s in his 50s than his 30s, which doesn’t help. At least here, his age is a better match for Sadie (unlike Mr. Mercedes), but still why a virgin? And the fact that she has an orgasm from her first penetrative sex? Sure, King. You’re still a man after all.
