This audiobook is beautifully done. Some of the other reviews here are saying that the writing was poor, or juvenile, and I don't see that at all.
Another complaint I read is that the motivation of the characters is unsupported, and I can see that a little. The narrator says that Florence's progressiveness, which borders on applying a modern lens to historical settings, was a result of her being so well-read, and that's not so far-fetched. But Lord Belfield taking her on as a bookbinder in the first place, when he doubted her story from go, frankly is.
I loved the pace, the descriptions of the meals, the horse, the surroundings and buildings, the characters. It's immersive and beautiful.
I loved the exploration of themes like race, white-passing, parenting, class, gender, and sexuality.
Some of the mysteries I could see coming before they were revealed, but the biggest ones, neither I nor Florence suspected, which I thought was cleverly done.
In sum, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I wonder if the reviewers complaining about the writing would have done better to listen to the audiobook, which was flawless.
