So Happy for You by Celia Laskey

2.0

For a book that I thought was just okay, I did speed through this pretty quickly! I still don't really know how I feel about this one. On one hand, there was a lot I loved: the almost dystopian-like alternative setting in the U.S. (this could've been played up way more though), the wedding charms, social commentary on the wedding industry and the cultural facts along the way (like how bridal showers were one of the invented customs in the 1950s to increase income for businesses). These are the aspects that kept me invested - plus, I wanted to see just how absurd the wedding charm rituals would get. This book felt timely too since I'll be in some upcoming weddings!

On the other hand, there was so much that was just annoying: the anticlimactic ending, the forgettable plot, but mostly the 2 main characters. Ellie was your stereotypical "brideszilla" without any other depth. Having spent four years attending WGST college classes for the major, Robin reminded me exactly of the type of students I found often populating those classes - obnoxious, self-righteous people with a very basic, sorta white-washed type of feminism who thought only *their* opinions were correct. I truly couldn't tell if the author wrote Robin as a satire? Or if that character portrayal was genuine?

Honestly, overall was a fun read because it was so different from what I normally go for. I just am so mixed about it! And, did I mention I despised the ending???
