I first read this novel when I was a teenager after seeing the movie. I was swept away by the love story between Yuri and Lara and skimmed through the more difficult parts that consisted of dialogue and diary entries about the philosophy of the revolution, art, relationships, and the meaning of human life.
I loved it this time around even more because I read it with a better understanding of those difficult sections. But still, as I read I could hear Lara's Theme played on the balalaika and I visualized Omar Sharif, Geraldine Chaplin, & Julie Christie as Yuri, Tonya, & Lara...and yes, I'm still swept away by the romantic parts and I love both the book and the movie.
