Orange Is the New Black: My Year In a Women's Prison
by Piper Kerman
While not quite as compelling as the Netflix show based on Piper Kerman's prison experience, the book is an open window into one woman's experience of her 13 month prison sentence. Piper writes with an honesty that shatters the stereotyped image of a convict. She shows vulnerability, strength and compassion throughout. It would not surprise me to hear that she is still close with the friends she made while paying her debt. She also brings to light, without being preachy or vindictive in any way, the real flaws in the correctional system.
