No Longer Human by Osamu Dazai

3.0

No Longer Human has this weird twinge I can't quite explain. It's a combination of depressiveness and elation; a critique and a warning. No Longer Human is not exactly a commentary on the workings of society, nor is it exactly about the greed of humans. It's about living a life of shame; it was written with no other motive than to be a confession of shame. And also a true depiction of horror.

As this book puts it, its displaying demons as they are and not sparing a single ugly detail. This book spares no time on the gruel details of this tragedy called "Yozo Oba's Life", and it's artistically tasteful in that way. This book was, I think, an expression of everything that has been bothering Osamu Dazai, which in turn allowed him to take his own life, probably, without any true regrets. (Of course this is mere speculation. I don't even dare to pretend to know what goes around in Osamu Dazai's head. Throughout reading this book I cant even imagine a single expression from Dazai as he writes this book. Its impossible to know.)

This book is a confession. An exclamation. And, although might be inadvertent, a warning of sorts. Written by a, frankly, insane man.
