People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks
4.0
a book that started off as a two star and nearing a DNF, i ended up actually loving it. i just think Brooks' depiction of her modern characters are some of my least favorite approaches. they are often overly witty, snarky, and just make some odd off-color comments with flippant attitudes that i don't particularly jive with. but when it comes to the historical aspects of her books, she completely breathes life into them. i felt so deeply for Lola, Zahra, and Ruti - all women that worked to save such a beloved piece of culture and knowledge. i really loved traveling alongside the book and learning with the main character how all of its quirks came to be. following such an underreported part of Jewish culture and how it was influenced throughout its time was really beautiful to follow.
