The Gatherings by Jeremy Ray

4.0

For as short as this is, it's wonderful.

There's something to be said about how quickly one can create enjoyable characters, set up a scenario, and run with it while making the reader in such a short amount of time.
Genuinely perplexes me on how well this worked out. May be the jealousy talking.

With a little bit of a post apocalyptic vibe, followed by The Ruins style horror, this story works so well to give an easy reading. While the world's going under, it's nice to sit back and focus on something that's not a thousand pages long and still really good.

At 74 pages, Ray establishes the main narrative (as told through a journal entry being written by the main character) and goes on to give us a wild ride. Well-written with some fun and grotesque imagery, The Gatherings manages to crawl under the skin all within the short number of pages.
