The Sandman Vol. 8: Worlds' End by Neil Gaiman

4.0

I understand why many people list this as their least favorite part of the Sandman series. Apart from the ending, it does very little to progress Morpheus's story. Instead we have what looks like a bit of a prototype for Vertigo's House Of Mystery anthology series.

A reality storm strands people from many different worlds in an inn where they pass the time telling stories. The stories sometimes involve Morpheus, sometimes don't. But each issue is a separate, well-written story with a different artist providing the visuals. All the stories are excellent. It just removes the urgency from the main Sandman story, probably because the artist needed a lot of time to work on the upcoming Kindly Ones storyline.

This is still great. Without the rest of the Sandman books surrounding it, this is a five star book. It's just the least five star book in a series that was consistently a five star book for me.

I recommend it for people who enjoy Neil Gaiman's short stories, and those who like learning about fictional cultures.
