The Glass Bead Game by Hermann Hesse

4.0

What a tranquil novel, given the times it was written in. I really enjoy reading Hesse; if I find that some of his views lack novelty, it is not his fault. This is a very long book. The ways it is broken up (the poetry, the Magister Ludi's other incarnations) make it feel much shorter than it is.

What's the difference between those who are part of the world and those who aren't? Collectivism vs. individualism, which serves us better? It doesn't even pose the questions -- it straight up gives you the answers. What is your role? What drives you to that role?

I did not know that this had won awards when I picked it up, somehow, but I can truly see why. I'm very happy I got to it!
