I Survived the Nazi Invasion, 1944: The Graphic Novel by Georgia Ball, Lauren Tarshis

2.0

I love this series and I love that it has come out with graphic novel adaptations, which will make more kids read it and make it more accessible as well.

I have deliberatly avoided reading this I Survived story. I have read many Holocaust books and was worried that there would be some barriers and differences with a Holocaust story for children. I was right. This book was way too soft and happy for a Holocaust story. People died. A lot of people. In this book, not a single person dies and that really bothers me. Their father got taken away, but somehow finds his way back to his kids for a happily ever after? No way. Kids need to hear the real story and I was disappointed with this one.

One of my favourite part of this series is the facts in the back. I liked that this book showcases the ghetto and partisan fighters, which was different than most Holocaust books, which focus on the interment camps. However, the facts in the back avoid the topic of death, just like the rest of the story. It talks about how "only 200,000 [people living in Poland] survived the Holocaust", rather than mentioning the millions who died. Kids can read about death. It is actually better that the read about death so that they have some familiarity with it when it happens in real life. They can experience their emotions within the safety of a book so that they are more prepared when those emotions hit hard in real life.

I am just really disappointed in how they handled this topic.
