Super Extra Grande by Yoss

3.5

Super Extra Grande follows our main protagonist, Sangan Dongo, as he traverse the universe treating the maladies of giant alien species—lot of intestinal adventures here! While I would’ve liked more plot, I loved the idea of Spanglish as the lingua franca in Yoss’ universe, where Latin Americans have pioneered space travel with the Gonzaléz Drive. The culturally rich descriptions—like traveling through “tons of glop the consistency of flan”—really stood out. LOL. I do wonder if non-Spanish readers might struggle with some of the language.

Early on, there are also some machismo viewpoints that were a bit off-putting, but I did feel like Sangan Dongo comes around by the end. Yoss is an intriguing author with some really off-beat ideas. He veers off into weird tangents—random syllogisms, play formatting, plus deep dives into alien biology. It’s definitely a vibe. If you’re into quirky sci-fi—think The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams—this might be a good one to check out.
