Keeping in mind that this book was originally written and published in the 90s, it's not bad. It's well written... but that's all that is really going for it. Elena is a little one-dimensional, however I can believe that there are seventeen year olds like that in the world. Between her friends: Bonnie is a lot more developed than Meredith. Caroline is too typical of a classic high school mean girl--90s though. I wish there was more of a Heather's vibe with Caroline. Honestly, my favorite character in the whole book ended up being Matt. Good, all-around-great-guy, Matt.

I'm not even going to talk about the pacing of this book because, as well written as it is to keep me going to get through two books (basically combined into one), I cannot get behind the fact that this all happened within two months. I do enjoy how well the flow into each other.

One thing I am very glad to say is that I was able to separate the book from the television show. Granted, I am very in love with how well they grew those characters in the show.

Although I have to admit, my favorite part in the book(s) is when Elena decided to use Margaret's new kitty against Damon.
