This is a 6 star book!!! I don’t know if it was my Covid brain or my ignorance that didn’t allow me to see in 2021 how amazing this book is. I can understand that the world building and magical elements may be a bit confusing upon first read, but I feel like everything made so much more sense during this second read. This one stuck with me as a favorite at the time, but I think this is easily one of my favorites of all time now.
This story has so many layers to it! The way Tracy Deonn weaves these different elements into the life of our main character is masterful! It tackles grief, racism, friendship, magic, love, and heritage - no one element takes over the story as they each get their own spotlight throughout the book. I felt anger, giddiness, sadness, shock - even had goosebumps at more than one point in the book! I have such an appreciation for how Deonn laid out Bree’s story and revealed how each puzzle piece fit. It really makes for an unputdownable read!
I recommend the audiobook as well. Great experience!

Wow. Wow. The first 75% was leading to a 4.5 star read, but the last 25% of the book blew me away. So much happened. I cannot wait to read more of Bree’s journey.
