The ending and last third of this book really improved it for me and left me with a way better opinion on it. Before that, however, it definitely dragged in places and there are sections that didn’t feel entirely necessary to me, making it an even longer book to get through.

That being said, the author writes so beautifully and leaves off with a very powerful and touching message on how history follows us in unseen ways (via generational trauma, which may not always be known), and how it must be met head on and not avoided.

She wove this very skillfully with a lot of interesting Slavic folklore, real history taken from her own personal family history, and some magical realism in a present day setting.

While I struggled to get through the second half of this book until the last chunk, I would still recommend it as other people may have more of a tolerance and patience for the things that didn’t click for me. My copy has quite a lot of sticky tabs I placed over the course of my reading it, and I will be glad to write down the passages and quotes that stuck out to me and stayed with me the most.
