Holes by Louis Sachar

I’ve read this book several times in my life and really like the movie (because it’s so close to the book). It’s really just a timeless classic to me. It’s straightforward storytelling, but it’s not dry and boring. The sub-plot of Sam and Catherine always breaks my heart. This story is a great reminder that we can be haunted by previous generations, but we also have a lot to say about what the future looks like.
