The Bad Beginning by Lemony Snicket

5.0

Dear Reader,

I know that I already have a review up for this book, well, audio book, and I gave it 4 stars that time, but now, I have come to realise that it deserves the full 5 star rating.

This book is the (bad) beginning of the lives of the three Baudelaire siblings, Violet, Klaus, and Sunny, following the death of their parents in a fire. The opening page alone really does a good job at setting the overall scene for the entire book and then the other twelve.

The first thing that I realised that I loved about this book, from even the first page, was that it is almost interactive, with Lemony Snicket opening the story and telling the story of the Baudelaire siblings. Daniel Handler, for any of those who are unaware, is the author and Lemony Snicket is his pen name, does such a good job of setting the scene and he uses such vivid details when describing what is happening which I love so much.

Even though I listened to the audio book some time ago, this is actually the first time that I, a 20 year old adult, have read this book. I have been searching for a set for years but I finally gave up when I found this copy, which was a surprise to me, in my local Waterstones. Since I never grew up reading them, I never knew how much different the movie was to the book as I grew up watching, and loving, the Jim Carrey adaptation of this novel.

When I was reading, I could imagine reading it out loud to young children, putting on different voices for each character, and getting them to interact with each other as it was read to them, which I think would be really cute. Get children back into reading!

There is definitely a definitive difference between the Baudelaire's life before and after the death of their parents, and even though we aren't really introduced to their beforehand life, we can definitely tell that their life has went really down hill when they moved in to live with Count Olaf. I mean, nobody is going to have an easy life when they find out that their parents have died, but the Baudelaire situation takes even more bad turns, they really are children with bad luck

You can definitely read this book in one sitting, and I could have too if I hadn't started it at three in the morning, but I did manage to finish it when I woke up the next day. It is such a quick and easy read, which could be the fact that it is a book aimed at children, but there are others that took me a hot minute to read.

I really did enjoy reading this book and I recommend you read it also if you have not done so already.

With all due respect,
Jade Evans
