Burnt Sugar by Avni Doshi

4.0

A very interesting and well written read. What drew me to this book was not only the pretty cover with the plant, but the title “burnt sugar” - which could be a reference to a tainted relationship between mother and daughter.

Antara is the daughter of Tara, who is suffering from early signs of dementia. Antara lives in Pune, India and has to become the carer of her mother. This proves difficult due to the sticky relationship between them because of her mother’s past of leaving Antara’s father and joining an Ashram and becoming a disciple, and abandoning and then abusing her when she occasionally returns.

Antara believes her mother is out to get her, and it’s interesting to see how affected she is when she reflects on her relationship with her husband, and then her new born child.

A dark but consuming novel that explores maternal relationships, death and dementia.
