The Poet X
by Elizabeth Acevedo
4.5-4.75 stars
I needed something to distract me while I worked on a tedious task and decided now was the time to give this shortish audiobook a shot as I really enjoy poetry and slam poetry video posts. I listened to the audiobook since it was read by the author herself, and it absolutely blew me away. Elizabeth Acevedo is an incredible performer!! I'll definitely listen to her other books in audio format as long as she reads them all.
Oddly enough, it took me a bit to fully get into the story. Not sure if it was due to me not knowing anything about this story but it wasn't the writing. The story was interesting and held my attention early on. I guess I wasn't sure in what direction this story was going in. Not sure when I became fully absorbed in the story but when I did I knew I had to finish this audiobook in one setting. I caught myself making a mistake because I was focusing on what was going on and even teared up at some scenes... around other people...I was that emotionally invested. This book is full of important themes that affect people but especially females; I feel anyone can enjoy this story due to the broad topics that are brought up.
