Ehhhhhhhh. In general I have eclectic tastes and a high tolerance for books that other people think are boring, but this book defeated me. I did finish it, in a moment of personal triumph, but I am here to tell you that I was bored. Chrimes makes little to no effort to engage the reader, opening the chapter on Henry VII and the church with the statement that there was nothing new, innovative, or unremarkable about Henry's relationship to the church and the chapter on Henry's foreign policy with the announcement that there was no point in a detailed discussion since it had been ably covered by other writers.
There is some interesting stuff here -- I wanted to know more about Henry VII's apparent mistreatment of Catherine of Aragon, but Chrimes briskly dismisses it in a couple of pages. But I don't know, you guys. I recognize that this is an academic text but surely the author should make some effort at sustaining the reader's interest.
