Gangsta Granny by David Walliams
My 10yo has read several Walliams books, and based on what I’d heard from him, and what I know of Walliams as an actor, I was sure this book would be almost entirely silly. Which it was! Almost! The ending had my 7yo sobbing his face off (“This feels like ‘Old Yeller’ all over again!”), and although I wasn’t teary myself, it really threw me for a loop because the rest of the book was just a ridiculous little caper about stealing the Crown Jewels and...reality TV ballroom dancing? Yes. (What luck that we started this right after we’d seen the actual Crown Jewels, though. That was very cool for me kids.) Anyway, this is a very long review of a very goofy book, but it made my kid cry because he got attached to a fictional character, so if I were constitutionally able to rate books by stars anymore, I’d add an extra one for that. ⭐️
