Columbine
by Dave Cullen
What a terrifying thing. I read this book after receiving the new fire drill procedure from our school district. Remember when the fire bell rang, and you immediately got up and evacuated? We aren't to do that anymore. Because it could be someone simply trying to get us out of our rooms to hurt us. We are supposed to see if it is actually a threat, then evacuate.
It is 19 years after the events at Columbine. There have been more shootings and killings at schools. I'm 1999, I was a freshman in high school. The shootings at Columbine created ripples all over the country. 6 days after, there was a bomb threat at my school, and all the students were evacuated to concentrated pods on the outskirts of the school for hours.
The students I work with were born after Columbine. They do not know of a time when massive school shootings were NOT a thing. When I think about the anxiety that could come with that, I wonder how any student goes to school, and learns.
The scariest and most disappointing part is that these kids showed signs. And the signs were ignored. Are there signs I'm missing?
