Monstress, Vol. 1: Awakening by Marjorie Liu

4.0

Oh wow! I have no idea what to even begin to think after reading this comic book. At first I was confused because I had no idea where the story was going, but as I got to the middle it all started to come together and I was amazed at how much I enjoyed this story. Here are some things I like about it:

-All the badass female leads in this story. I love it. The independence, the ability to rule the world. I was completely amazed and really enjoyed this part of it.
-The artwork was completely beautiful. I will admit it was extremely gory in some parts with body parts being separated form their owners, but it was amazing.
=The story line itself. I haven't ready many books or comics with the science fiction element and this one definitely fulfills that concepts with humans and the Arcanic pretty much going at each other. But then it also includes a third group called the Cumaean who seem to be working with the humans in an attempt to destroy the Arcanic. The characters and the origin of these characters alone is pretty freaking complex, but I definitely enjoyed it.
-I love Maika. She's a badass and just all around amazing.

Things I didn't like:
-The world building was a bit complex for a comic book. There was so much going on.
-It moves pretty fast. It was hard to understand what was going on in some parts because it seemed to progress too quickly.

Overall, I really did enjoy this comic book and I definitely will be picking up the second volume when it releases.
