This book was both heartwarming and heartbreaking. Getting to revisit one of my favourite childhood worlds, it was kind of nostalgic, but you also see these characters through a completely different lens. Marissa Myers blurs the lines between hero and villain in a way that is so captivating and imperceptible, it’s like the transformation of Catherine into the Queen of Hearts was so subtle that by the end it’s like I’ve been slapped in the face.
The characterisation of Jest was… I love that man too much to put into words. He was so pure and selfless and genuinely deserving of the whole entire world. Wholesome was a word made for this man. It’s the way this man has never made a selfish decision in his life, but the one time he does, it’s like the world came crashing down on him. It was the most heart wrenching thing to read and bear witness to.
