Broken at Love is Lyla Payne's first book release, and I have to say she really nailed the new adult genre!! This was a great new adult contemporary romance about defeating ones demons, and falling in love.
Broken at Love is written in first person, and alternates point of view between Emilie Swanson, and Quinn Rowland. I LOVE books that are in alternating povs, and Broken at Love was no exception! This book would not have been nearly as good if it had just been in Quinn's pov, or just Emilie's.
When it comes to the characters I really did like Quinn and Emilie, Quinn is a 'bad boy', that plays games with girls feelings and sleeps around. Emilie is an artist and strong minded. I thought they were a great pair for each other, Emilie is the first person that actually cares for Quinn and wants to help him, and Quinn feels he is permanently broken and does not deserve someone like Emilie. I have to admit Quinn would get rather frustrating with his emotions, one minute he wants to be with Emilie, the next he is pushing her away again, I understood why he was so conflicted, but it was still frustrating. Emilie I really enjoyed, I felt she was easy to connect with, and I loved that she played hard to get with Quinn and put him in his place.
Although Quinn and Emilie are the main characters, I have to say my favorite character was probably Rudy who is Emilie's friend and room mate. I found her so hilarious, she wasn't in Broken at Love as much as I would've liked, but I am hoping book two will either have more of her, or be her story. She had a great personality and I would have loved to have gotten to know her more!
Each character in Broken at Love felt, right (if that makes any sense) I never felt like any of the characters personalities were forced, each character and how they acted, what they said, fitted perfectly. I flew through Broken at Love in one sitting, and couldn't believe how quickly I had gotten through it. Lyla's writing has great flow, which is something that to me is very important in a book.
Now you're probably wondering, why I rated this 3 after everything I have said about it? Well, the only reason I didn't give Broken at Love a 4 or 5 is because while I did really enjoy Broken at Love, it was pretty predictable. It follows the same type of storyline most New Adult Novels seem to go with, bad boy with a broken life that only wants sex from girls, then in comes a girl that isn't his usual type and completely changes everything. It's a storyline that is slightly over done in the new adult genre, but Broken at Love is hands down my favorite out of the ones I have read, and I will deff be reading book 2.
Overall, if you're someone that loves steamy new adult novels, with awesome characters, and a great romance then I would recommend picking up Broken at Love. (:
