Over the Top: A Raw Journey to Self-Love
by Jonathan Van Ness
Most people who know me know I am OBSESSED with JVN. I just adore him. One of the happier experiences I've had in the past few years is seeing him perform stand up in Orlando. I was so happy to get to know him further in reading this book.
I got the audiobook with this, because I have trouble with non-fiction. I hardly ever finish reading a non-fiction book. I am about to teach a non-fiction driven course, so I better buck up. Anyway, JVN reads it, of course. I am not sure the level of interest I'd have in this if I didn't love JVN so much, but this is a must-read for any of his fans.
I saw some complaints about his report on Bill Clinton being inserted into the book - I had no issues with this, and in fact, it made me laugh out loud. I do feel it could have used a heavier hand in the editing - he tends to jump around and the timeline gets murky. Also I had to go back and reread some pieces because he doesn't fully detail his various incidences of trauma, and so when he mentions them later, I was unsure what details I needed to remember about these moments. The tone is a little hard to read at times - the sarcasm doesn't always come through 100%. Still, he told his story because more LGBTQ+ stories need to be told, and I love how his persona of fun-loving JVN that drops super intelligent knowledge-bombs comes through in this book.
He asks in the book, would you still love me if you knew the real me? Absolutely yes. I love him even more.
