This book is included in PEN America's Index of Banned & Challenged Books and was generously donated by a friend for distribution to Little Free Libraries in my community.
Suffice it to say there are a number of potential triggers throughout this book, and not all of them are handled as well as they should be. That still doesn't mean I think the book should be excluded from any library- school, public or otherwise. It simply means that I think parents might be well served to read the book WITH their younger kids, or even read it themselves first to make an informed decision. Ya know, like we should do with all books instead of making it so no one can read them.
Anyway, I wasn't all that invested in the characters and I didn't find the story very believable or realistic, though I can see the potential appeal if I had been a teenager when I read it. The whole concept of high school kids faking their own deaths- successfully- in an attempt to escape their crappy lives was pretty far fetched. Overall it was a decent way to pass the time, but it wasn't very memorable.
