Digital Minimalism: Choosing a Focused Life in a Noisy World by Cal Newport

informative inspiring slow-paced

3.0

I didn't think I was the target audience for this book, but I will admit that it made me reflect on my habits and realize that I may in fact be part of the target audience for this book. That being said, the book was very repetitive and I could have gotten what I got out of it if it was 100 pages shorter. There was also nothing revolutionary about it, but it was a good slap in the face to stop checking my phone incessantly during the day. It did inspire me to take a long walk and paint this weekend and now I want to take more long walks and paint, so success. It's inspiring me to be a little adventurous and go do things in solitude but not in front of my computer.

So, while this book is inspiring behavioral changes, I did not like the book. Cal Newport has always struck me as a little preachy, and that rubs me the wrong way. I also wanted to be done with it the whole time I was reading it. I'm sure I have skipped many sentences in my haste, but that didn't diminish my understanding in the slightest. I think I'm better off for having done that.
