Freedom Is a Constant Struggle: Ferguson, Palestine, and the Foundations of a Movement by Angela Y. Davis

4.0

Part 1 of this piece is interviews with Angela Davis and the second part is a collection of her speeches. An excellent discussion overall of the resistance movements to capitalism and US state violence. The point of the collection is to drive home the point that “injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere,” demonstrating how Ferguson and Palestine struggles are connected, how the prison industrial complex is connected to slavery. She goes in depth into a critical of bro-liberalism and hyper-individualism.

One of her central topics is urging people to critically think about how is designated as a “terrorist” and why. And how the U.S. uses their terrorism list as a way to discourage resistance to inequitable policies.

Quote “it is not the responsibility of the oppressed to ensure the safety of the oppressor.”

Recommend for anyone who wants to understand how everything is connected and ensure their position on these different issues consistently aligns with their values.
