Killer's Payoff by Ed McBain

adventurous mysterious tense medium-paced

4.0

The 87th Precinct novels haven't aged particularly well - oh, the misogyny - but for their time, they are good representations of mid-century noir/police procedurals. If you can set aside the depictions of women, they are fun. The ending of this one particularly made me laugh. I probably won't be able to binge too many in a row without getting really irritated, but for now, they are enjoyable. The audiobook narrator is annoying at regular speed, but if you bump it up to 1.4 or so, he's still intelligible, but also becomes a lot better for "noir".
