Adapted from Hugo's novel by David Hine and illustrated by Mark Stafford, this graphic novel adaptation of The Man Who Laughs is a blistering, well-paced, beautifully illustrated interpretation. The story is made clear and gripping, and the characterisations of the women, whom Hugo writes with simplicity as opposed to the men, jump off the page. Dea's softness is endearing and Josiana is the portrait of a ferociously priveledged dutchess.
Graphic: Ableism, Bullying, Gore, Infidelity, Violence, Grief, Medical trauma, Death of parent, Classism
Moderate: Body horror, Blood, Abandonment
