"'what you have to understand,' she says, 'is that things can thrive in unimaginable conditions. all they need is the right sort of skin.'"
this book is so deceptively beautiful that you almost don't notice the horror until it's already spiralled. the characters are so human, there were many points where i wanted to reach through the pages to hug miri, or ask leah to explain the intricacies of ocean life in greater detail. this was a book i really struggled to put down, and where i felt genuinely sad at having reached the end. i love books about the ocean but this one was so uniquely special, julia armfield's writing style is so engaging i just wanted to keep reading forever. this is definitely a book i will be returning to many times over, and probably my favourite read of this year so far.
