Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco

3.0

This was interesting and I’m not fully sure what to think of it. On one hand, the main character and her love interest were intriguing and captivating. Their banter was lovely. Audrey Rose does not compromise her femininity through having darker tendencies, and it was well done.

The writing was good (though the exposition tended to get too much at times ? that’s just coming from an editor standpoint. I would at times forget what the last character was saying because there was a huge dump in between each line of dialogue. might just be a first book kind of thing.)

I’m not a huge fan of it being based on a real killer, however. Its fiction, I recognize. And the next three books do not follow this pattern, but I found it hard to ignore that Jack the Ripper DID actually murder people. A lot of fictional liberties has been taken in the years to forget the truth of it all, but I personally would find it hard to read about someone writing a fiction novel about, like, Ted Bundy being their brother or something. It feels wrong somehow, as if we’re taking away from the victim’s stories by making it like this.

Again, it’s fiction. There’s a lot of leeway. Zac Efron can play a serial killer in a movie and be raw about it. This book did not pretend that Jack the Ripper, whoever he was, was a good person or that he deserved to be redeemed. It was honest about their disgusting crimes. I can forgive that part. Just felt a bit weird, and if I were a family member of one of the victims I would be a bit weirded.

It was interesting, as I said. Will most likely continue the series
