Tilt
by Emma Pattee
having lived on the pacific northwest my entire life, i’ve always been aware of the “big one.” so hearing about this debut from emma pattee, which happens to be set where i live, i was intrigued. pattee’s writing does an excellent job of putting you in annie’s shoes, who happens to be nine months pregnant in ikea when the earthquake hits. as a reader, you are submerged in annie’s mind, filtering through her thoughts the same time she is while also following every step of hers. it truly made it hard to set the book down, as it leaves you eager to know how her story ends.
the fact this book spanned over one day is what makes it so impactful. the way pattee also incorporated chapters were we got a glimpse at annie’s story truly helped me connect with her even more. however, i do believe that pattee’s writing style isn’t entirely for me. she does an excellent job setting a scene and painting a picture, but i feel like leaning more into the moments of conversation and community would’ve made this story feel even more human and enriched the story for me.
thank you to edelweiss and simon & schuster for this arc!
