The Retribution of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin
2.0

2.5 stars - This was one of the most disappointing finale's I've ever read.

For someone who just binged the first 2 books in this series, I still struggled to become invested in this book which is quite telling; it took over a week to read only 100 pages. Once I sat down and forced myself to read I was able to get through the last 370 pages in a single day (with the help of an audiobook). The author really does have an addicting writing style - it's just so simple and easy to consume.

This book was no different than the others in the series and comes with a long list of trigger warnings. I truly despise how Hodkin carelessly & constantly mentions suicidal tendencies/attempts all the while romanticizing mental illness. She also thought it was a good idea to add another sexual assault in there too and then refuses to discuss the aftermath it can have on the victim. It's as-if the author wanted to continuously go for shock factor but in actuality it just reads as insensitive.

Even though this series is "paranormal", the plot in this third installment was extremely unrealistic which constantly pulled me out of the story. The book ended with far too many unsatisfying loose ends and nothing was thoroughly explained. Any explanations we did receive were beyond confusing.

Overall I'm happy to be done with this series, wouldn't recommend it, and never intend on picking up the companion books.
