Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia, Margaret Stohl

4.0

I will be honest. I was a bit skeptical about this series, but I was plenty surprised. I won't say it's the next Twilight, but is definitely a series to watch. The writing is a bit corny at cheesy at times, but it is YA Lit. I know we expect our kids to be reading the classics, but everyone needs a break sometimes (even teachers like me)! I am all for any series that is getting my kids to read. I already have the two sequels (waiting on the last one to come out in paperback because I can't stand to have a series in different formats...weird I know). I enjoyed the fantasy element, an I thought the love story was believable and endearing. The only real issue I had was with the voice of the narrator at the beginning. I didn't immediately realize the narrator was a boy. That's a tiny nit-picky issue that wouldn't discourage me from recommending this to my students (and some of my fellow teachers who secretly read YA lit on the weekends).
